56 Sqn 90th Anniversary & Families Day

The squadrons anniversary weekend began on Friday afternoon when a nine ship diamond formation departed Leuchars and flew around the region to mark their years as an RAF squadron. On route a photo opportunities were taken over Edinburgh, The Fourth Bridge, Dundee and St Andrews.

On Saturday, families day began at Noon and parked on the apron were an array of aircraft that would have not been out of place at a full blown air show. Aircraft included 56 Sqn's Tornado F3's, 2 F16A's 2 f16B's of the Danish Air Force, 2 Mirage 2000C's of the French Air Force, 2 F15C's of the USAF. Other visiting aircraft included a 6Sqn JaguarT2, 33Sqn Puma, 100Sqn Hawk, AS350 Squirrel from Shawbury, Hawker Hunter T7 Privately owned, Jet Provost T3 Privately owned and an assortment of civil light and micro light aircraft.

 

SE5A Replica

The arrival of the BBMF with Dakota Spitfire & Hurricane heralded the start of the flying program. This opened with a raffle winner completing a tandem jump quickly followed by a role demonstration by two F3's of 56 Sqn, the  fly-past of a Nimrod, a display from a replica SE5, then a Tucano. Then a special with the Danish Air Force demonstrating an airfield attack the shows flying culminating  with the BBMF displaying all three aircraft. The outdoor side of the event was ended in spectacular fashion when a race between an F3 and a Chevvy Dragster took place with the F3 on the runway and the Chevvy on the parallel taxiway.
