Italian aerospace and defence company Finmeccanica-Alenia Aermacchi
along with its Instrumented Production Aircraft 2 (IPA2) MMX-614,
arrived at Warton in Lancashire and along with the help of engineers
from MBDA & BAESystems they were to complete flight trials of the MBDA
Strom Shadow. The flight trials were flown from Warton to the coastal
range at Aberporth. The UK-based trials will see the missile being
released from Italian IPA2 aircraft in order to collect safe weapons
separation trajectory data and to verify the correct release sequence of
the missile.
Finmeccanica-Alenia Aermacchi was designated to integrate the addition
of the MBDA Storm Shadow onto Eurofighter Typhoon’s potent simultaneous
multi-/swing-role capabilities. Already in service with both the RAF &
Italian air forces on their Tornados the MBDA Storm Shadow is a
conventionally armed, stealthy, long-range stand-off precision weapon
capable of striking in all-weather conditions, well-defended
infrastructure targets such as airfields bridges, control centres,
bunkers, missile sites and port facilities, which might otherwise
require several aircraft and missions. |
